Do not get Parallels if you have the new Mac Mini with the M1 chip at least for awhile. The x86 architecture for Windows 10 won't run on a Mac with the M1 chip since the OS architecture is different.
Microsoft has been working to create a version of Windows 10 that is based on the OS architecture that will work on the M1 chip. Also, Boot Camp is not an option nor likely to be in the future. One of the considerations in switching from PC to Mac was the ability to run a Windows VM for Visual Studio development while still getting decent battery life and solid Windows performance.
After some extensive research and a 14 day trial run, I was sold on Parallels. Windows 7 performance was actually better than the two year old i5 PC I was replacing. The deep integration with OSX became more and more apparent as I got used to the new shortcuts and other Apple conventions. I don't use the application sharing, but the folder sharing is seamless and eliminates the need for me to run any backup software on my VM since Time Machine will pick it up by default.
The only real issue I have encountered, and this is no fault of Parallels, is the way Windows handles the Retina display. Most newer apps look great, but older ones scale with varying degrees of success. This problem only gets worse when using a non-retina external monitor though Windows 8 handles this better than 7. I only capitalize that because the Parallels website doesn't have much information about Linux support though the Amazon description does. I'm not sure why this is, but it is certainly a big selling point for devs and should be prominent on the Parallels website.

I'm taking a statistics class that required me to download and use a software program called minitab that only operates on Windows and of course; I no longer own a PC and installing software to do school work on my office laptop was not something I intended to do. I really hemmed and hawed about partitioning my MacBook pro and at one point, had the crazy idea that maybe I should just buy a laptop for the purpose of taking this one class.
My 1 issue with VMware was that once installed, I consistently had issues connecting to the internet - something I absolutely needed to do for my class. Thankfully, a friend of mine turned me on to the Parallels software and I'm so glad I made this purchase. I'm not at all tech savvy but installation of this software, followed by Windows purchased separately , was a piece of cake; I didn't even have to call my dad for help :. Running Windows on my MacBook is super easy and I have no problems at all connecting to the internet, which means less time spent troubleshooting and more time spent studying!

What is most important, you don't have to buy another copy of Windows. First 3 programs are "must have" for each user.
Installation process of Parallels is as easy as possible could be. Highy recommend if you have some important Windows base software. This has been the best purchase I have ever made. I have a power mac with 16 GB of memory I am an avid Genealogist and use a family tree software only available for the PC. Parallels gives you a program that will image the files off of an older PC and let you migrate them to your mac. I can also select safari and osx-mail as my primary browser and mail program in the windows portion.
It's almost like having my must-have PC Software on my mac. This is the best purchase I have ever made for my MAC. Parallels 10 is great, not only for running Windows inside Yosemite--which, thankfully, I don't have to do--but for running Mac OS That I DO need to do: it enables me to run legacy software which Apple left high and dry when it made the baffling decision to stop supporting Rosetta after Snow Leopard.
This runs regularly and reliably, every single day, unlike my attempts with VMWare Fusion and even earlier versions of Parallels, all of which were very unstable or unusable for one reason or another. One caveat: if you want to run OS An excellent product at a very good price. Parallels Desktop filled a gap for me.
I use Quicken to manager my finances and when I moved to a Mac I found the Mac version of Quicken left a lot to be desired. Parallels Desktop was able to permit me to keep both versions. I have a technical background but this was so easy, I'm sure those folks without any technical background and who can follow directions will find they can install and use the product. It's very easy to install and it was so easy to install Windows 7.
